Before you go
View in daylight and dry weather; wet bikes hide a lot. Bring this checklist and don't rush.
Walk-around
- Tyres: tread depth, age (check the date code), and even wear.
- Chain & sprockets: slack, lubrication, and hooked sprocket teeth.
- Brakes: pad thickness, disc wear, and firm lever feel.
- Frame: look for crash damage, cracks, or fresh paint hiding repairs.
- Fork seals: no oil weeping down the stanchions.
Running
Start it cold: a bike that's already warm may be hiding hard starting. Listen for knocks, watch for smoke, and check all electrics and warning lights.
Paperwork
Confirm the VIN matches the documents, check service history, and verify there's no outstanding finance. If anything feels off, walk away. There's always another bike.
