How to Change Your Motorcycle's Oil

A step-by-step guide to changing your motorcycle's oil and filter: what you need, how often, and the common mistakes to avoid.

How often

Most modern motorcycles want fresh oil every 6,000-8,000 km, or once a year, whichever comes first. Check your manual for the exact interval and the correct oil grade.

What you'll need

  • The correct oil and a new filter
  • A drain pan, funnel, and torque wrench
  • A new crush washer for the drain plug

Steps

  1. Warm the engine for a couple of minutes so the oil flows freely, then switch it off.
  2. Remove the drain plug and let the old oil drain fully.
  3. Swap the oil filter (smear a little fresh oil on the new gasket first).
  4. Refit the drain plug with a new crush washer, torqued to spec.
  5. Refill with the correct quantity, check the level on the sight glass or dipstick, and look for leaks.

Dispose of used oil responsibly at a recycling point, never down a drain.
