Are cheap motorcycle helmets safe?
Yes, as long as they carry a real certification (DOT, ECE 22.06 or SNELL). Certification is pass or fail, a $150 lid passed the same impact tests as a $700 one. Extra money mostly buys lighter shells, quieter aero, better ventilation and plusher liners, not a legal-minimum jump in safety.
What is the cheapest SNELL-certified helmet?
The HJC i10 is the value standout: SNELL M2020 certification for around $160. SNELL testing is stricter than DOT, so it is rare to see it at this price.
What do you give up with a budget helmet?
Mostly comfort and refinement: budget lids are heavier (polycarbonate shells), louder at speed, ventilate worse and usually skip extras like Pinlock anti-fog inserts and internal sun visors. Protection, if certified, is not the trade-off.
